Empowering Learners Living with Disability Through Entrepreneurial Training: Van Schaik’s Ongoing CSI Initiative
At Van Schaik, we believe in the power of education and the potential it has to transform lives and this belief drives our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme. Since its conception in 2016, this initiative has focused on offering annual training to 20 learners living with disability, equipping them with essential Entrepreneurial Skills. The aim is to foster independence, creativity and the confidence to explore self-sustaining ventures.
The program was initially spearheaded by our HR consultant, Danie Engelbrecht and later passed on to our Training Manager, Neo Kagiso in 2018, who brought his hands-on approach to the project. Kagiso’s involvement has helped to further shape the initiative, ensuring its continued success and positive impact on the lives of the learners.
In 2024, we proudly partnered with the Bophelong Special School in Mafikeng, where learners with a variety of physical and developmental difficulties were selected for this vital training. Conducted by Moroeng Enterprise on September 4, 2024, the program was tailored to meet the learners where they are, offering practical knowledge on starting and managing small businesses. The training covered topics like identifying market opportunities, budgeting and developing basic business plans.
Kagiso, reflecting on his experience with the initiative, shared: "It’s been incredibly rewarding to witness the growth of these learners over the years. What began as a passion project has now become a movement that genuinely changes lives. Every year, we meet extraordinary individuals who, despite their challenges, display remarkable resilience and creativity. This initiative gives them not only the skills but the confidence to believe in their potential."
Through this initiative, Van Schaik seeks not only to impart business knowledge but also to inspire hope and ambition among the learners. By empowering them, we are fostering a culture of inclusion and contributing to a future where everyone, regardless of their difficulties, has the chance to achieve their dreams.
At the heart of our CSI programme is a deep-rooted belief that education should be a force for good. By continuing to train and support learners living with disability, Van Schaik is helping to create a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
