Inspired by our passion for, and dedication to education, Van Schaik Bookstore recently donated stationery for two projects conducted by SHAWCO.
SHAWCO, the Students Health and Welfare Centres Organisation, is a dynamic, innovative and passionate student-run non-profit organisation based at the University of Cape Town.
The first project we supported was the Academic Programme in May. We donated stationery to the value of R8 700 for Grade 3 - 11 learners. The second project consisted of donating station-ery and files to the value of R10 000 for the SHAWCO Saturday School for Grade 12 learners in June. SHAWCO partners with 52 schools in the Western Cape.
SHAWCO Education Sector Project, whether student run or staff run, aim to impact the academic ability of learners to access education, increase tertiary access, and offer additional interventions such as arts, sports, entrepreneurship, life skills and career advice. The overall holistic development of learners is also balanced by the experience, development and leadership opportunity of the students who volunteer and become leaders in the sector.
SHAWCO has over 10 student projects running in the five SHAWCO centres (Khayelitsha, Kensington, Manenberg and Nyanga), schools and children homes. Volunteers are transported to the centres where they engage with learners with a structured curriculum. The Academic Programme focuses on literacy and numeracy whereas intermediate and senior projects focus on English, Maths, Physical Science and Life Skills.
We hope to build a longstanding relationship with SHAWCO to address the dire need for quality education in the Western Cape.
