On 26 August Van Schaik Bookstore won the Sefika Academic Bookseller of the Year Award for the third consecutive year. This is also the first time for a bookseller to be presented with this award three consecutive times since the inception of the awards 14 years ago. The announcement was made during the awards dinner of the annual South African Booksellers Association conference held at Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel and Convention Centre in Durban.
Most of the bestselling printed textbooks are now also available in e-textbook format from Van Schaik Bookstore, in-store or on-line. With more than 4 500 titles available from Van Schaik, it covers 131 fields of study from accounting to linguistics. World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated on 23 April every year and we celebrated this during the month of April by hosting events for learners from disadvantaged communities at some of our branches or at their schools around the country. We took hands with our suppliers and publishers to make this special for the learners by doing something special with and for them. This year's sponsors included Van Schaik Bookstore, Internet Express, SMD, Pilot, Freedom Stationery, Alplas Plastics, Jacklin Enterprises and Pan Macmillan.
NSFAS recently introduced a new system at some institutions called sBux, a division that handles the administration of NSFAS book funds to allow students to pay for food, accommodation, books and travel allowances in the form of sBux vouchers which are sent to the bursary students' cell phones.
Van Schaik opened a second store in Thohoyandou on 28 February to service UNISA students and those of the University of Venda. The shop is situated at Shop A14, Venda Plaza, Corner of Main and Casino Boulevard.
